The second last leg of our journey sees us heading to Mpumalanga to our parents house.  This is also where our younger sister lives.

Although we live far apart, we are a very close-knit family. December is one of those “official” times set aside for family. It is also the time for lots of food —  Gammon, Lamb and beef, all done according to old family recipes, and without fail too much!  Then there is of course my mom’s date cookies which she only bakes in December.  It just follows that you have to eat as many as you can because it only comes around once a year!

We will diet again and shed the extra kilograms, after New Year, when life returns to normal.

Let me show you the grasslands of the Highveld, covering rolling hills as far as the eyes can see, with many different hues of green. This is farm land intermixed with the occasional opencast coal mine and electricity plant.  Although I prefer a more tropical environment, this area too, has a charm of its own.  This trip has been marked with rain as far as we went, but we got blessed with some summer skies on the day.

On this day, we Wish you …

May your garden always be filled with flowers even if you haven’t planted any.

May your heart always be filled with joy even if it has broken.

May God hold you every day, protect you,

And may he bless you with His love now & always…

If you have children, you put up the tree at Christmas time.  It’s been a family tradition for as long as I can remember.  Well, since the kids were born anyway. This year none of our children are home for Christmas.  I was midway through putting the stringlights up at the stairs when I got this bit of news.  Needless to say, I didn’t feel like putting up anything any more.

I left it for a day or two, and then it hit me:  who says you must have a tree? Christmas is a time of taking special care; a time for dress up and  a time for taking a little bit more care to make it all nice.  Definitely don’t want to miss out on that… Gotta have something.

Here are some of my favourite ideas.

Christmas is family time and this year the boys and I are going back to our roots, so to speak.  Sadly my daughter Laetitia only returns from the USA in January, so she won’t be joining us this time.

Back to our trip: we plan to undertake an epic 2000 km journey (roughly 1,242 miles) which will see us cross 6 of the 9 provinces in South Africa and feast our eyes on some breathtaking scenery.  From tropical Pietermaritzburg, the Midlands of Kwa-zulu Natal and majestic Drakensberg mountain range, over the grasslands of the Free State, the city life of Gauteng, to the bushveld of Thabazimbi (to visit the in - Law’s).  And then all the way to the town we grew up in and where our parents still live to celebrate Christmas!

It all starts here - This is the kloof (at the edge of the botanical gardens) and the view from my back yard… my own paradise.

I will post photo’s of our journey and share our beautiful country with you.  I do hope you’ll join me.

Come… take a road trip with us.
