Polka dots have been trendy for quite some time now. This pattern isn’t new and it comes & goes, but there’s still something timeless and classic about a good polka dot print.

It doesn’t have to be limited to nurseries and kids rooms either.  When used in the right way in the right scale, polka dots can add a whimsical touch without making a space feel too “young”.  Interiors are incorporating the polka dot pattern in a more sophisticated way now.  There is indeed a way to make this fun pattern part of your decor while still keeping things somewhat “grown-up.”

Rugs are a great way to introduce the pattern into your decor.  A neutral colour anchors the space and doesn’t make it too busy

Deniot has a love for neoclassicism and a knack for taking historical references and updating them in a sophisticated way.   His approach was to ask himself what an interior of today should look like.  The answer to him is “thoroughly grounded in tradition”.  The result is anything but typically traditional — mixing cutting edge with the classical, his signature low-key lux style can be seen throughout.

The eye-catching wall treatments can practically pass for works of art. For the library, a pattern inspired by bark was laser-printed on canvas. In the dining room, the gold-and-pearl horizontal lines on the custom wallpaper were created by applying successive layers of paint, varnish, and marble powder.  Stripes in the guest bath consist of alternating strips of French and Portuguese limestone.

Even if traditional is not your thing, this apartment is a must see.

Backsplashes no longer just have to help hide or keep those splashes off the walls — it’s also a great way to create unique visual interest.  Here is what Australian design firm Doherty & Lynch did with the very unique backsplashes in these kitchens.

BIG visual impact and a great design idea.

Here they painted the kitchen wall with a blue ombre style stripe on the wall and then installed floating shelves.

Black and white graphic wallpaper is applied to the wall and then covered with either clear plexi or glass.

Paisley wallpaper create a beautiful contrast against the white and the wood

Simple black or white frames make the prints look polished. To me it is either or not both. The look should be cohesive, with a nice contrast and focus on symmetry. Now… the choice between black or white frames…

What’s better than a chair upholstered in a gorgeous fabric? A chair upholstered in two gorgeous fabrics. It is a terrific way to add visual punch and a surprise element to a room. The secret is to vary the scale, pattern or color enough to create a high degree of contrast. Limit yourself to two fabrics and choose versatile patterns that will stay fresh and that you’ll love for a long time.

Here’s a few ideas on how to elevate a simple piece and transform it into a one-of-a kind gem.

“Mom, do you have another set of iphone earphones?” - the first thought that crossed my mind was that Bianca must think I keep a secret stash of earphones somewhere.  Either that, or something has happened.  The typical thing a mother would think, right?

Last week she had an order for cupcakes for a music recital.  The request was for the cupcakes to be displayed on a stand of red gingham.  Resourceful as she is, she decided to make the stand.  And since it is the most natural thing for a 22-year-old to be listening to music, why not whilst working on a project?  Well, it turns out she was cutting the fabric on her bed (yep!).  She WAS holding it high enough, carefull not to cut the duvet.  Next thing she knew… earphones in 3 pieces!

I came across this picture and couldn’t help but smile.  I hope you’re smiling too…
