Teenagers are notoriously hard to please, and decorating teen rooms can be quite a task. A teenager’s room is his/her sanctuary; where they spend copious amounts of time doing “whatever” – a word which gives me goosebumps to this day. With the girls now both into their twenties and having overcome their unkempt days, I found myself having to do another teenager room. This time for our son Daegan. Thankfully he’s isn’t quite as finicky as the girls were!
This gallery of Terrific Teen Rooms are bound to put a smile on their face – gorgeous spaces for girls and cool lad pads full of fresh ideas.
A teenager’s room is more than a bedroom. They will want space for a desk, and somewhere to lounge around and an entertaining space too. So you’ll need to make the most of every centimetre of floorspace. With a loft bed, your teen can sleep on the top-level, leaving room for a desk or seating below.
At this age, all the colour and pattern move off the bed and onto the wall. Replace the bed sets with more neutral linen or a nice stripe and encourage your teenager to choose something decorative for the walls – or better still, get them to create something. They can hang a work of art, graphic decals or apply an adventurous paint colour.
Don’t be surprised if your teen arrives home with a whole bunch of friends in tow. Flexible, lightweight seating, like floor cushions and bean bags, turns a bedroom into a lounge room at a moment’s notice – when the job’s done, stack the pieces away in a corner.
Teenagers are notoriously unkempt but they can appreciate that there are times when a mess has to be cleared in a hurry. Give them storage options that are easy and even fun to use, keeping teenage clutter off the floor and schoolbooks at hand when studying.
Encourage their creative spirit through design. Think vibrant color combinations or brightly coloured furniture or storage that will inject some style into the scene.
